Dr. Wynndel Buenger

IPC Founder, Medical Director

Dr. Buenger served as an anesthesiologist for hospitals and pain centers across St. Louis for the past two decades, including his role as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management at Alton Memorial Hospital. He launched Interventional Pain Consultants (IPC) in 2018 to provide patient-centered, one-on-one care to individuals struggling to find pain relief from chronic and acute conditions. Today, Dr. Buenger delivers in-office care at IPC’s clinics in Alton, Maryville and Swansea as well as conducts surgery at both Alton Memorial and Missouri Baptist Medical Center.

While Dr. Buenger specializes in a variety of treatments, his passion for spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy, which masks pain signals traveling from the spinal cord to the brain through a small implanted device, has made him a leading pain management referral resource for neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons. Dr. Buenger has performed 40 to 100 implantations each year for the past two decades and regularly teaches the technology to medical students, residents and his fellow doctors. In addition, Dr. Buenger was one of the first providers in the U.S. to be trained in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation technology to treat complex regional pain syndrome. When Abbott introduced its new NeuroSphere™ Virtual Clinic in 2021, allowing specialists to prescribe new stimulation settings remotely, IPC became one of its top two providers in the country because of Dr. Buenger’s acclaimed work in the field.

In 2020, Dr. Buenger expanded his pain management solutions by co-founding WeCare Ketamine Infusion Center, the first clinic of its kind in St. Louis. WeCare offers infusions for patients with chronic pain who respond poorly to opioids and those suffering from treatment-resistant depression.

Dr. Buenger received his Doctor of Medicine from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine and completed his post-graduate training in general anesthesia with an emphasis on vascular and cardiac anesthesia at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He became a board-certified specialist in pain management in 2004 and continues to be a renowned speaker and consultant on the subject. Dr. Buenger is also a member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the International Spine Intervention Society.
